Bob Clearmountain's Perspective on Immersive Mixing
In January 2024, AudioTechnology had the opportunity to speak with veteran mix engineer Bob Clearmountain at Apogee Studios in Santa Monica, CA. The topic of conversation was around adapting to immersive mixing formats such as Dolby Atmos.
00:32 - What constitutes a good Atmos mix as a listener?
02:34 - Do you get any pushback from artists on how you use the centre channel?
04:13 - When you pull a vocal out of a stereo mix and pop it into its own centre channel, does that create any weirdness in the rest of the mix?
05:36 - Which Apogee plug-ins do you like to use?
06:21 - You have a particular way of using your SSL console to mix Atmos. How can this setup be replicated in a DAW?

Love the tilt up screen but come on Midas, give is a built in fader panel with masters & then there is space for additional control encoders. A proper compact version please; not this half-assed 2 piece thing...
This video was so helpful Thanks👏👏👏
Any one know what compressor is in the Hype mic?
Almost nothing will sound quieter on spotify... in fact, if something does sound quieter it means it was probably very loud and it was turned down... then due to it being loud in the bass region and having no dynamics it will seem quiet when the volume is turned down relative to a song that is -18 LUFS that spotify boosts to -14 using it's algorithm, which doesn't simple push the volume up, it pushes certain frequencies.
It has a matte finish! It looks cool, like a New York Steinway.
Huge Donny Benet fan. Such a refreshing take on a vintage sound.
All pof those monitors are about $500 to $600 a pair. Somebody robbed the shit out of you if you paid $1000 for any of those monitors.
Australian dollars.
Please tell me if I can put on H1n wav files from my PC for use them as backing tracks in a live concert. I need a solution for crisis situation of laptop failure. Thank you.
Advice caution the Zoom H6 essential ASIO driver is not compatible with the windows 11 arm64 and the error reported is it required x64 processor.I have been informed that there is no solution for this situation.it cannot be used as a audio interface on windows 11 arm 64.
What audio interface are you using with this microphone? I have the most expensive XLR cable you can get and the microphone still is very noisy. My audio interface is a solid state logic two
Joe is an amazing guy and a grand audio wizard! Most of my gear is JLM. Just spoke to him yesterday about my next order. Fabulous!
Brilliant. I'm not even a keyboard player and I'm enjoying listening to you guys.
Great interview, thank you. It´s great that someone with such a brilliant career like Bob, advocates the use of the center channel on Atmos mixes. Something that has been neglected on so many Atmos mixes, and that I never quite understood. Coming from a post background, I always thought that the center channel would be awesome for vocals, bass and other instruments if the mix asks for it. Universal on their specs for music mixing in Atmos, clearly disencourages the use of it for vocals, I guess based on the assumption that it could then be isolated and used for other purposes. But the point is that with today´s stem splitter AI processing technology becoming almost perfect, I think it doesn´t make sense anymore. And Atmos mixes with center channel even if just for vocals, sound to my ears way much better.
awesome video. Clean and simple, easy to follow and learn from. Thank you!!
❤❤
"Our apologies for the sub-standard audio quality" ? The irony here.
Sadly I saw them on the Power Up tour and now they use standard line arrays like other bands, can't remember what they used for Rock or bust tour (for black ice they still had the ones from this video)
you just high the level, ridiculous
That was cool, always loved your drumming with MAW
Why you raised the gian? It's not level matched at all
Should we expect this update on Babyface Pro FX?
i don't want to watch your face bro, but the plugin
how did urs work i got mine and i plugged it into my wave xlr and i get no sound noone can hear me and i clicked the mic but nothing
Hell yeah, Jeff is awesome!
"ewe, we're making a 'column'" - says the guy who's been selling Anna and Anya "columns" for years.
Basic patches are not the same as basic bitches. lol
Can't understand a word. Even turning subtitles on doesn't help.
Nice video. Keep up the good work. I am using an iPad 10th generation with a windshield Pop filter and I don’t know about you guys but when I use the compression settings and the vintage, I hear some white noise.
This could be a good system once it is released, not too heavy and still powerful. Without the app, you have to stand on your knees to see all the buttons and the display, so the app is necessary, at least for me. It's well overdue so I'm a little worried that there might be some issues with the first version so I wish they could communicate a little more about what's going on. I'm still keen to test the system at my outdoor gigs so I hope the system will be released before the end of the summer.
I wish it was possible to bypass the preamp ie use the EQ only with another external preamp
Love your music Donny. There's more great Music Man Bass Players - Tony Levin from King Crimson, Pino Palidino, Paul Denman from Sade's band, Justin Chancellor of Tool etc ... ;)
Wow, great interview!!!
Donny's webcam seem to be nearly as retro as his synth gear
Great demonstration and review as well as being an absolute sweetheart. Loved it!
I don't know why they sell this microphone as "podcast mic", I guess this is one of the most powerful microphone price/quality
How did you manage to run FOH for a band that size from a DM3 which only has 16 inputs. Surely they have way more inputs than that with all the drums / keys / instruments and vocals combined.
I believe you get up 22 inputs via Dante
Broooo Who got that poor old lady working security? She looks like shes about to die and they got her protecting the block. Wtf
thanks&goodness<3 mixing PREXENTS #prexents
thank you for the quick overview
Does it have reverb?
This is true to an extent: I think the problem comes in when you have “complete in the box” productions. There is a reason why dr Dre uses an ssl console still (uses plugins as well). I think if you got your sounds pretreated with some analog gear then you are golden to mix in the box.
What are those little mix cubes?
One of the best sounding shows I've seen & been a part of!
Thank you man for playing the guitar. I was debating the MV7 because I didn’t know what a recorded acoustic sounded like.
Let me sum this vid up in 3 words, EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE. And that is not a YT vid!
Yeah, yeah. It's just another compressor plug-in. It does the same thing all other compressors, do. The reason for the stepped attenuators? The didn't have continuous volume controls. Back in the day. They were all single resistors. My Faders. In my 1960s, Phillips, All Germanium Transistor, 12 x 4 audio console, had, 144 resistors wired in. For each volume control. Some were stepped. With click detent's. And some were continuous. But they were never really continuous. Because it was switching between, discrete little, resistors. And of course with the stepped ones. You could mark down your settings. That was called Automation. And you kept your automation on a sheet of paper. Stuck into the box of recording tape. You only had to worry about losing your data. On that piece of paper. And while coffee and beer is good in the control room. It's not on that piece of paper. I'm just saying…… Honey, that sidechain feature. On a Mastering Limiter, such as that. Was so you could insert. A high-frequency boost, equalizer. So as to create a High Frequency Limiter. To offset. The high-frequency,, Preemphasis Boost. Called the, RIAA, frequency curve. How sound is recorded on records. And that high-frequency boost. Can cause problems. With too much vocal sibilance splashy, cymbals. And that will screw up the cutting of records. Remember that was for, Capitol records. And they were. They certainly were. The same thing was also necessary for, FM Radio. It's the same EQ curve. The way FM is broadcast. A corresponding rolloff is then provided by your, radio receiver. So you then get a flat response. And was done to lower the hissing noise, otherwise. Of our, substandard sound and recording pieces. Otherwise they would be way more hissy. And who wants to hear a pit full of hissing snakes? When you're trying to listen to a love song. No attraction there for me personally. And so it sounds like this Mastering Limiter is actually doing some other things? I think it has a very, tailored, colored, sound. Which sounds real nice. It seems like they did a nice job modeling a tube limiter. With actually slow attack times. That's why it's not sounding all crushed. It, can't crush anything. It's only 4:1. As it's not 20 nor 50:1. And it does not have an ultrafast attack time. It sounds like a nice plug-in to own. If it's reasonably priced? And not like a Hardware Unit. Because what would then be the point? I guess I'm getting old at 68? RemyRAD
I thought his 57 was broken turned out it really was
Aston has more smooth and warm for me, good frequency range, more dense low-mid
Can u programme the UF1 to punch in / out un Luna Daw ?
Almost perfect. Just missing the battery powered option. Wish more companies would do the whole combine mixers thing. Was about to order 2 but then realized i need it to be battery powered.
